Pelvic inflammatory disease
December 11th, 2011 | by lu |In the United States, more than 750,000 women are affected by PID each year, and the rate is highest with teenagers and first time mothers. PID causes over 100,000 women to become infertile in the US each year.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is initiated by infection that ascends from the vagina and cervix. Chlamydia trachomatis is the predominant sexually transmitted organism causing PID. Newer, more accurate, laparoscopic studies have shown that PID may often be polymicrobial in nature (30-40%).
The more sex partners a woman has, the greater her risk of developing PID. Also, a woman whose partner has more than one sex partner is at greater risk of developing PID, because of the potential for more exposure to infectious agents.
